So, let's dispense with the legal talk about serial numbers on 80% lowers. 'Need, or not need. Sell, or not sell. 'make' or 'manufacture'.' None of that is my question- not looking for legal advice.
I just think I'd like to put serial numbers on them. There is a little info in one other thread, but i can't find much. I want to do it myself (otherwise why build it myself.?) So, here goes. What about my polymer lower?
Heat a letter/number stamp and press it in? Other suggestions?
Side of the magazine well? Under the trigger guard? What about anodized aluminum lowers? Does it have to be electro etching?
What about chemical etching? I have access to a Cricut, so vinyl stencils should be easy enough. After etching, the etched area won't be anodized- is that a problem?
I'm not an artist- can't draw a straight line with a ruler- so to make it look good, there has to be a stencil. If numbers work, shouldn't a small graphic work, too? But then the anodizing. (or for that matter, the missing anodizing in the fire control pocket I milled?). How about 'safe' and 'fire' marks?or just leave them alone? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

The ANN-80 and the FACP communicate over a two-wire serial interface employing the ANN-BUS communication format. Connected devices are powered, via two additional wires, by either the host FACP or a remote UL-listed, filtered power supply. ANN-80 is red; for white, order ANN-80-W.

Second, if you are applying a serial number to any lower, whether polymer or forged aluminum, it should be done IAW ATF regulations.
The essential markings have to be engraved or stamped in a certain font size and depth. Now, if you never intend to sell the lowers you want to serial number, it is a non-issue. You can mark them by any means you choose.
Frankly, I would leave it alone. This is one reason why I am not a fan of 80% lowers. Even if I was ever to do an forged aluminum 80% lower (for a retro build only), I would be sending it off to have it professionally engraved, and anodized afterwards. I would never buy a polymer lower. Edited December 27, 2016 by TackleberryMCS. First, I must ask why the reason for wanting to apply a serial number on a polymer lower? The polymers were 'to get our feet wet' and, at your suggestion, are the start of our.22LR builds (you said don't use them for center fire). The aluminum lowers, as we talked about in the other thread, are the base for some fantastically fun 5.56 rifles. I don't envision ever selling any of them (it's not like I've built 50 of them or anything ) and I don't care about the legal need or not- I just wanted to really do the 'whole' build from a hunk of aluminum up. But I thought it would be cool to have a serial number with my initials or something, and I've read that a serial number helps in case of a theft. For now, your advice sounds like what I expected from you and I'll leave them alone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
